Is your furry friend left out in the cold during the winter months? If so, it might be time to build them a dog house! In this blog post, we’ll show you how to make a simple and inexpensive dog house that will keep your pup warm and dry. So gather your materials and get started!
Choose the best place in your yard
First, you have to choose the best place in your yard to build the dog house. Remember that you have to keep something in mind while choosing it. The door should not face East or West, but North. The reason is that the north side receives less sunlight than the other sides. So if your sleeping area is facing north, then the sunlight won’t disturb him/her during sleeping time.
Dig a hole in that chosen spot
Dig a hole on that chosen spot, about two inches down from the top of the soil level and at least 30cm X 25 cm across. This makes good space for digging out some water later on which can be drained outside easily during rainy seasons by digging more holes on the sides of this depression. This also helps maintain humidity inside the box during hot weather, which is good for the dog.
Make a frame of 2” X 4” wooden boards with nails
After digging a hole at that place you need to make a frame of 2” X 4” wooden boards with nails and then attach it on that depression of the soil made in the beginning. This will be the floor of your dog’s house so keep this thing in mind while making it, don’t make it so weak that when your pet will put its paws on it, it falls down. Make sure all joints are strong enough otherwise one board can ruin your entire house.
Prevent drafts from entering inside the house by using a foam sealant
You have to prevent drafts from entering inside the house by using a foam sealant around the door area and between the top of walls and roof rafters. If there is space between wallboards due to a loose floor, then seal it with a thick cloth and paste it properly on the walls otherwise your dog will come out of that hole and start digging the house again.
Give a good finishing touch to your dog house by giving roof shape
Give a good finishing touch to your dog house by giving roof shape, make sure the roof is not longer than wall length because if it’s too long, rainwater can slide down from the roof and enter inside during heavy rainfall. Firstly make a wooden frame of the desired size, for example, one foot above ground level, now put some shingles or corrugated steel sheets on that frame. The soffit should be at least two inches higher than the top edge of the walls. After this step, your dog house is ready which you can stain or paint as you wish according to the color scheme of your yard.
Putting the door
After your dog house is ready now you have to make a door. You can buy it from the store or make it yourself at home by using some materials available in your garage area. For example, if you want to make a wooden door, first cut the shapes of any small door which are already present on market then paste that small door on your newly made big door with nails or adhesive material of choice.
Painting it
– After all this process you need to paint your dog house properly otherwise it will soon start looking old and dirty due to weather conditions so give it a good finishing touch was ever required by doing some painting work with a brush or spray gun. Now let your pet enjoy his new place on your property or garden where he can sleep peacefully.
If your dog is an adult one and it is not staying calm inside the house then you have to cut a small piece of plywood of the same size as the inner side dimensions of its current house, now attach this plywood to the floor of your new made dog house. This will be just behind the door so that when your pet opens door to come out, he won’t step outside into the yard directly, rather his front feet will touch this plywood first which will make him stop immediately. Now take some newspapers and spread them everywhere on the floor so that when the dog steps out by putting all fours on the ground, it doesn’t spoil the interior area with mud or feces.
So now your finished dog house is ready, enjoy!
